Most write-ups of summer in northern Calvert County treat Dunkirk as a place you drive through on the way to Solomons or back up to Annapolis. That framing is a habit, not a fact. The strip of Route 4 between the Ward Road traffic light and Town Center Boulevard has quietly assembled enough new independent businesses, a park anchor with a Thursday market, and a second nature park a mile east to fill a full week without anyone crossing a county line.
This is a guide for people who already live here. If you have been treating Dunkirk as a grocery run and a Target stop, the 2026 season is a good moment to look again.
The Thursday Anchor
The Calvert County Farmers Market returns to Dunkirk District Park on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., running May 21 through September 3, 2026. It sets up in the parking lot next to the skatepark at 10750 Southern Maryland Boulevard, which matters if you have never been. The market is not tucked behind the ball fields. It is the first thing you see when you pull in.
Two practical notes for regulars. First, the market runs Thursdays only in Dunkirk. The Prince Frederick market at CalvertHealth is Tuesday afternoons, so if you miss Thursday you are driving twenty minutes south, not catching a Saturday version up the road. Second, the park itself is a 107-acre site with a skatepark, dog park, playground, and fishing pond in addition to the sports fields. On a Thursday in July you can stack the market with a walk-around loop and stay off the highway entirely.
Ward Farm Is Not Just The Sports Fields
A mile east on Ward Road sits Calvert County's newest park, and it is still under-used by people who live within five minutes of it. Ward Farm Recreation & Nature Park at 10455 Ward Road currently offers multi-use athletic fields, nature trails, paved pathways, and a fishing pier, with future construction planned to add boardwalks over ponds and wetlands, a nature and environmental center, picnic shelters, a disc golf course, playgrounds, and camping space.
The reason to know this park in summer is not the fields. It is the trail network and the pier. Ward Farm opened to the public in March 2022 and is best for breeding birds in early summer, which is the window most residents miss because they are thinking of it as a soccer venue. If you own a home in Dunkirk and you have not walked the loop out to the fishing pier, that is the entry point. The trails are open from 8 a.m. until dark, so a 7 p.m. weeknight walk in July is fully legal and mostly empty.
One more thing worth knowing. A trail along Ward Road is planned to eventually connect Ward Farm to Dunkirk District Park. That connection has not been built yet, but it is the piece that will convert two separate parks into a single walkable park system a mile long. Watch for it.
What's Actually New On The Route 4 Strip
Here is the part most residents do not track carefully because the storefronts turn over quietly. Calvert County's economic development office keeps a running list of businesses that have opened, relocated, or expanded in the last twelve months. Filter for Dunkirk addresses and the pattern is clear: independent, service-heavy, mostly women-owned, clustered on two blocks.

- Thai Zapp Grocery, 10347 Southern Maryland Boulevard. A companion to the restaurant a few doors down. BayNet's late-2025 walkthrough found rice, ramen, sesame oil, fish sauce, and a large snack section from around the world, with hours of 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
- SOMD Knockout Zone, 10818 Town Center Boulevard. A woman-owned boxing and fitness studio offering boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai–inspired workouts, TRX, and functional strength sessions.
- Beauty Boss Supplies, 10096 Southern Maryland Boulevard.
- Med Beauty Spa, 10072 Southern Maryland Boulevard.
- Chesapeake Academy of Dance, 10800 Town Center Boulevard.
- Simply Chic Boutique, 10130 Southern Maryland Boulevard.
- Fresco Studios, 10379 Southern Maryland Boulevard.
- Poe Law, LLC, 9860 Southern Maryland Boulevard.
- Penuel Behavioral Health Services, 3150 West Ward Road.
Read that list as a group and something clicks. This is not a chain-restaurant refresh. It is small operators taking Route 4 storefronts in numbers, which is what happens in a town center that has hit the point where day-to-day errands and evening routines can be done without leaving the corridor.
The Weeknight Question
The old rule in northern Calvert was that a Wednesday dinner meant either cooking at home or driving. That rule is softer than it used to be. The Dunkirk stretch of Route 4 now supports a reasonable rotation without repeating a cuisine inside two weeks.
The core options, all within the same three-mile band along Southern Maryland Boulevard: Chesapeake Grille and Deli at 10092, serving cheesesteaks, flame-grilled filet steak, and Old Bay chicken and shrimp pasta with Maryland wine or beer; Thai Zapp at 10318; Fujiyama at 10302, a hibachi where the chef prepares the meal in front of you; and Anthony's Bar and Grill, Mamma Lucia, Peri Peri Original, Pinky's Eatery, and East Cafe, all named by Yelp's May 2026 update as the best restaurants near Dunkirk 20754. Add Bubbalou's Artisan Sandwiches at 36 Dalrymple Road in Sunderland for craft BBQ and high-quality sandwich work, five minutes south, and you have a two-week rotation.
The point is not that any single one of these is destination dining. The point is that the density is now high enough that the calculation of whether to drive to Annapolis has changed. On a Tuesday, it usually has not.
The Bigger Signal Behind The Storefronts
Two things are happening under the surface of the summer that residents should know about, because they explain why the storefront churn looks the way it does.
First, the town center is being replanned for the first time in a generation. Calvert County's Planning Commission directed staff to update the Dunkirk Town Center master plan in February 2021, and the plan had not been touched in 32 years before that. The proposed boundary change is the part worth watching. The future town center boundary is proposed to expand to the northwest to include Dunkirk District Park and to the northeast to include the Dunkirk Park and Ride. That folds the park you already visit on Thursday into the town center itself, which changes what can be built around it.
Second, employers are betting on the corridor. PATRIOT, a veteran-owned facilities and infrastructure firm, broke ground on a two-story, 14,000-square-foot headquarters at the corner of Ward Road and Ferry Landing Road, with the space designed to house additional administrative staff and expand its Southern Maryland footprint. That building sits between Dunkirk District Park and Ward Farm, on the same road you use to reach both. When it opens, weekday foot traffic on that stretch changes.
Neither of these is a lifestyle detail on its own. Together they explain why a boutique dance studio, a Thai grocery, and a boxing gym all landed within a mile of each other in the same twelve months.
A Working Week, If You Want One
Put it in order. Monday, a walk on the Ward Farm trail before the light drops. Tuesday, dinner at Thai Zapp or Chesapeake Grille. Wednesday, a class at SOMD Knockout Zone. Thursday, the 2:30 market at Dunkirk District Park with an ice cream stop after. Friday, Bubbalou's for takeout on the way home. Saturday, a longer loop combining the park's paved pathways with a browse through Thai Zapp Grocery. Sunday, quiet.
None of that requires Route 4 south of the Sunderland light or Route 260 east to the bay. It is a Dunkirk-only week, and it is a genuinely new option.
