London Town Is Giving “After Dark” A Different Meaning

Restaurants and bars account for much of Edgewater’s evening activity, but Historic London Town & Gardens is broadening the definition.

The South River property at 839 Londontown Road held its inaugural Firefly Festival on June 17 and 18. That event brought live music, a night market, illuminated gardens, pop-up performances and activities focused on nocturnal pollinators into the grounds from 6 to 9 p.m.

Those dates have passed, but the festival offers useful context. London Town is experimenting with programming designed around the character of the gardens after normal daytime hours.

The next opportunity is an interactive outdoor production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, presented with Compass Rose Theater and featuring student actors ages 10 through 18.

The production invites patrons to bring a blanket or reserve a chair. Guests may also dress in character or purchase fairy wings or crowns at the event. It is a playful use of the gardens that feels specific to the setting rather than transferable to any outdoor stage.
